Emergency #'s in Cocke County:

The Pigeon River is very accessible, with I-40 nearby, though not always visible. However, as with all emergency situations, a short distance can grow considerably when you are unable to leave for help or when your access to others is via an Interstate Highway. You will be unable to flag down passersby in the event you need assistance and to even attempt this would be very dangerous with cars zooming by at 70 miles an hour. So, as with all outdoor activities, it is well advised to be as self-sufficient as possible, while on the water.
Recommendations:
>Take a cell phone with you. It may or may not work in the immediate location you find yourself, but you should have relatively easy access to a tower and service.
>Call 911. And have other emergency numbers with you.
>Know where you are. Look at a map of the immediate area and be familiar with which exit you are closest to. Do not assume Emergency Service providers know the area.
>When participating in any activity in the wilderness, always have someone with you who knows the area.
>Always let someone know where you are going and how long you expect to be gone.
